Call for free over 3G networks – VoIP apps review

One of the main advantages of traveling with a smartphone are the apps – be it location based apps, travel apps, cloud apps and all sort of other. One of the best ways to utilizing apps abroad is using them for communication. When traveling abroad, KeepGo is dedicated to providing a one-stop solution for all your online access needs.

As Apple allowed for VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) about two years ago, there was an explosion of apps that allowed you to call for free over the internet to any number in the world. So the next time you are going abroad, read this article and download any one of these apps to save you some cabbage when calling back home.

There are four main platforms now (as far as I know, although tomorrow there may be many more) that support calls over data networks: Skype, iCall, Fring and Viber.

So… what options for making calls over 3G data networks are available for iPhone users?

Let’s take a look at the iCall app that allows VoIP over 3G: iCall for iPhone.

First of all, you can download the iCall App for free from the Apple Store.

iCall offers three packages: Total Access, Pay-as-you-go and ad-supported free USA and Canada calls.

iCall’s Total Access package includes free and unlimited VoIP calls over 3G to the US and Canada and dirt cheap rates for all the other international calls. The package costs $9.95 per month and includes a customizable voicemail.

Pay-as-you-go plan call rates are slightly more expensive, but are still very cheap.

Ad-supported Free Calling is great for those who need to call the US and Canada most of the time. As it says – it’s free, but is limited to 5 minute calls. However, you can’t make calls over 3G networks to the rest of the world using iCall, unless you subscribe to either Total Access or Pay-as-you-go. And if you subscribe to the Pay-as-you-go plan, your calls to the US and Canada won’t be free any more. So… it’s kinda tricky.

Tough decision to make :)

Just to sum up the features offered by iCall for making calls over 3G:

  • Free ad-supported USA and Canada calling (with a 5 minute limit)
  • Possibility to receive VoIP calls even when the app is not running
  • Option to switch cell phone calls to VoIP
  • Those calls don’t count towards your cell-calling plan
  • Cheap international rates, especially for those who choose Total Access Plan
  • Compatible with Apple devices… and more.

Now let’s see how Fring’s VoIP over 3G works

Another solution for making free calls is Fring, which is also free.

Here is the detailed explanation on how Fring works over 3G:

With Fring you can pretty much call anyone in the world – VoIP calls through 3G or WiFI, Video chat with up to 4 people who have Fring installed, and even call people on their mobile or landline through FringOut. Also, since the app is available on almost every other platform (Android, iPad, Symbian and more) you’ll be to talk to quite a lot of people, not just iPhone users.
Also, If you have an SIP account (like Vonage, perhaps) you can set up your Fring account to use your SIP setting while you’re going abroad and avoid those 3G roaming charges.

    • VoIP calls on 3G, 4G and WiFi
    • Free calls to other Fring Users.
    • Cheap calls to mobile and landlines around the world with FringOut
    • iPhone phonebook integration
    • Free video group chat, with up to 3 other Fring users
    • Free unlimted IM with Fring, MSN messenger, GoogleTalk, AIM and ICQ users
    • Detailed call history and more…

Probably the most popular app at the moment (and has been for the last few years) is Skype.

Since Skype has been around for so long, their strength lies in their user base, which has crossed the 500 milions a few years ago. Going abroad? chances are your friends will have you use Skype to call them while you’re there.

But what about the feautres for the iPhone user?

Skype offers  free Skype calls between Skype users over 3G and WiFi (pc-to-pc, phone-to-pc and phone-to-phone), cheap VoIP calls to any phone number in the world with SkypeOut, free Video calls between Skype user and free IM. Keep in mind that any free service from Skype has “Partner advertising”, while only the paying programs are ad-free.

Skype also offers some premium services that are aimed at heavier users, like: unlimtimed calls to any U.S number for $6.99 per month, unlimited calls to landlines in 20 european countries for $8.99 per month. Their top-of-line plan, which allows calling any landline in the world for $13.99 per month.

  • Free VoIP calls on 3G, 4G and WiFi to other Skype users
  • Cheap calls to mobile and landlines around the world with SkypeOut
  • Unlimited call plan to the U.S for $6.99 per month
  • Unlimited calls to landlines in Europe or the world for a fixed monthly fee
  • Free unlimited Video chat with other Skype users
  • Free unlimted IM to other Skype users
  • PC/Mac client available, allowing for Phone-to-computer video and VoIP calls

Another worthy contender is Viber

Unlike Skype, and like other apps, Viber is smartphone only client. It’s available both on iOS and on Android platforms.

Though most other clients allow video calls as well, Viber is focused and dedicated to voice calls and text messages using your 3G data plan or WiFi, bypassing your providers voice and text-messaging networks. Viber offers these services free of charge with no advertisements, with no hidden fees and no premium services – all services are free.

But the biggest benefit Viber offers compared to the other apps is the “push notifications” feature – even if you have Viber off, or in the background, you will be able to receive calls and messages, and be notified of missed calls from other Viber users. It does so by “pushing” the info straight to your phone, the only thing you have to make sure is to not turn off the data connection.

  • Free VoIP calls on 3G, 4G and WiFi to other Viber users
  • Free unlimited IM to other Viber users
  • A unique “push notifications” feature allowing you to receive calls even when the app is off

If you’re planning to travel abroad with your iPhone and use the VoIP over 3G, beware of data roaming charges. The solution is to rent an  3G Internet SIM card from KeepGo and enjoy free data roaming (i.e. free Internet access anywhere you go, free emails and now – free phone calls over 3G as well).

If anyone knows about any other apps that support VoIP over 3G, please let us know.

and… Enjoy 3Ging :)

Traveling with iPhone: use iPhone to save money

Traveling overseas is a costly affair, especially when you travel with your family. It’s not only tickets and hotel costs, but restaurants, presents, museums and theatre tickets, toys, games and movies for kids, car rental… the list is endless.

Besides that, you want to be connected with your family and friends who stayed at home: you want be able to call them, share your experiences with them, and send them the pictures of those stunning places you’re visiting.

An iPhone can help you solve lots of those problems and even save a lot of money, making your vacation more enjoyable by eliminating unnecessary costs and financial worries.

Here are some tips for you:

    1. Travel overseas? Switch your 3G data roaming ON. It’s FREE! Well, first of all, with KeepGo iPhone rental plan you don’t need to switch your 3G data roaming off. You need to get used to the idea that by renting an iPhone or Unlimited Internet SIM card from KeepGo, you secure yourself free 3G data roaming. Yes, that’s right, no data roaming charges! No hidden costs or $3000+ bills awaiting you on your arrival for using data roaming overseas.

    1. Hotel discounts finder application: you can save a lot of money, using Local Sales Finder or similar applications to find great hotel deals in an area of your choice. You can also book a hotel directly from your iPhone. To choose a hotel, check the online hotel ranking and read other visitors’ reviews. You can also find a hotel near you and immediately see if this hotel offers a discount.

    1. Local Sales Finder can also be used to find cheaper gifts or just do shopping. It helps finding better deals and great shops in a city you may not be familiarized with.

    1. Traveling with iPhone is simple and saves lots of time, worries and money. With a touch of an icon you can find all the local attractions, museums, theaters, cinemas, restaurants and more (e.g. Museum Mate for iPhone or Movie Tickets for iPhone).  Are you feeling hungry. No need to start running around looking for a restaurant. Let your iPhone lead you. You can also easily find restaurants on budget near you or book tickets to a movie in a cinema located for you by your iPhone. And remember: no roaming charges!

    1. It often happens that your kids get bored or just want some new toy. Maybe they want to watch their favorite movie or play a game. Instead of buying expensive and useless presents and toys, install your kids’ (and yours? :) ) favorite games and movies on your iPhone. How to migrate data from one iPhone to another

1. Make sure you have the latest iTunes version, at least iTunes 8.
2. Synchronize your iPhone with iTunes.
3. Connect your iPhone to iTunes and backup your iPhone to seperate file. This backup will be copied to rented iPhone and later will be used to restore your iPhone.
4. Connect rented iPhone to iTunes and when it shows up in devices click on it and then right click on it and choose Restore from backup. Then iTunes give you options which backup to restore from, choose the one you did in previous step. It will restore all settings, though it will not yet restore all content you had on your iPhone.
5. Your rented iPhone will show up in Device section in iTunes with exactly the same name as your iPhone. Click on the name and change it back to its original name (choose one). This way iTunes will make backups of rented iPhone and will not mix up with the backups from your iPhone.
6. Choose synchronize options in iTunes and click Apply – it will copy all content from your iTunes library (including applications) to your rented iPhone. Now your rented iPhone has the same name and settings as your iPhone.
7. If you travel with rented iPhone abroad and want to use unlimited 3G internet, (the service provided by KeepGo.com), specify in rented iPhone settings all configuration details of your abroad cellular carrier (these details provided to you by KeepGo.com). Now you are setup and ready to go.

You can copy all your content and settings from your iPhone to the rented iPhone using the steps shown in the video below:

How to post on Twitter from your iPhone while abroad

When you are abroad and you use your own AT&T locked iphone (not keepgo.com iphone) then your data roaming switch is off. It is better be this way, because otherwise you just can encounter enormous data roaming charges. It also means that you can not post tweets from anywhere like you are used to do in the USA using AT&T 3G internet. So, how you still make posts on twitter and how much it could cost you ?

You can post by sending sms to local twitter number. Because you are outside of USA each sms will cost you $0.5, meaning if you do 15 twitter updates per day on average and you travel for 1 week you will pay total $52 just for updating twitter. When you are traveling there are so many new exciting things you want to tweet about, to remember, to let your friends know so why to limit yourself? Just use keepgo.com service and you have unlimited twitter capabilities everywhere and thousand other things you can do from iPhone. Happy traveling with twitter!

Choosing iPhone Applications for an overseas trip

choosing iphone appsThese days, smartphones fulfill a very important role in our lives. A person that upgrades to a smartphone handset never considers switching to any other type. The reason is obvious: smartphones are used extremely often in our everyday life. We need them all the time – to check email, take photos, confirm the weather, browse the web, to play, to listen, to record everything around, to memorize… and sometimes even to call!

For the majority of smartphone users, this small handset became an essential helper in performing most tasks. But the true significance of this device can only really be appreciated abroad. Suddenly, when you’re overseas, knowing where to go and where to stay becomes very crucial, and your small assistant can help you anytime, anywhere.

Traveling abroad with a smartphone is a fun and pleasurable experience. However, in order to enjoy the full abilities of the device, you have to prepare your small assistant for the trip. Choosing the right applications is very important and will enhance your travel experience.
But how do you choose the right applications that will suit your travel needs? For an iPhone, for example, there are tens of thousands of applications, so how do you choose the few apps that will suit your needs the most?

There is no precise answer. However, based on my experience I can give you several tips on how to build the correct kit that will help you abroad the most.
I’ll divide my recommendation into 4 categories – transportation, communication, adaptation, and entertainment.

1. Transportation

If you are travelling, then you are on the move, and if you are on the move, then you use a lot of public transportation. Consider before your trip what kind of transportation you will be using.
• In big cities like London you probably will use an underground – so do not forget to download a tube map and locator app.
• If you want to take a taxi don’t forget an application that finds you the nearest cab service (and simultaneously checks the prices – it’s very common everywhere in the word to overcharge tourists).
• Install a train schedule – they are usually very precise.
• Don’t forget about your flights (especially back home) – there are a variety of programs with live departure feeds.
• Check for location based applications that will assist you in finding transportation stations and stops in your area.
As a tourist you will use different types of transportation, and being prepared can save you a lot of money and time!

2. Communication

iphone apps for communicationYou’ll probably want to stay in touch with your loved ones, or your boss, so don’t forget about communication.
• First of all, download Wi-Fi Finder. Hotels usually charge outrageously high rates for their internet usage so find free Wi-Fi zones and browse the net there.
• Check if your default e-mail application really suits your needs – there are a variety of e-mail solutions for any mobile phone.
• Install VoIP communicators. We recommend Skype, or Fring. You’ll save a lot of money especially on long intercontinental calls.
• Social networking – you probably would like the world to know how much fun you’re having, and of course you want to share recent photos with friends. Preinstall Facebook, Twitter, Myspace etc. and make them all envious.
Think about information you may need abroad. There are different types of apps that provide solutions to these needs. For example, you can connect your home computer’s hard disk (using Folders app) and download files to your iPhone, or you can check your bank account and stocks while abroad. Check out iStore to get ideas.

3. Adaptation

iphone travel appsWhen you travel you’ll want to feel at home even while you’re far away from home. There are many useful applications to help you accomplish this.
• Be prepared. In some countries the weather is unpredictable so check out weather prediction applications.
• Overcome the language barrier by installing a dictionary and translator. Look for applications with audio pronunciation. If you are on a business trip, check out dictionaries with professional language.
• Currency and unit converters are highly recommended. Be aware that you exchange your dollars for a fair rate. Know the temperature in Celsius. Drive carefully while considering that your speedometer is in kilometers per hour. Remember that numbers can mean different things in different countries.
• Local Holidays Calendar – you will be surprised how many holidays you can find in one country. Use this application before your trip, but also take it with you – you will probably forget some important dates.
• Install as many travel supporters as you can – city sightseeing guides, cultural recommendations, audio travel directories, and local gems finders. There is never enough of this software.
• Download location based applications to help you with your routine – like finding places to eat or sleep. These applications are vital for a disorganized vacation. When looking for such locations using this software, check if you can find online reviews. Knowing what locals think about a restaurant or a hotel is extremely important.
Think of what problems you may bump into. Look for applications that will help you find solutions to these difficulties.

4. Entertainment

While abroad you may spend a lot of time in trains, cars, planes, lines and more. Instead of considering this time as wasted you can download applications that will help you spend this time more pleasurably.
• Download your favorite movies and music before your travel. Don’t think that you will be watching on-line content, because usually you won’t have good internet connection on public transportation.
• Download games. There are games for all ages and genders, and there are never enough.
• Upload your favorite books onto your iPhone and read them anywhere in the world.
• Install radio applications. You will be able to listen to your favorite channels almost everywhere.
There are a lot of different applications that can make your “useless” time more entertaining. If you’re going to travel with an iPhone, browsing “games” and “entertainment” directories in iStore is highly recommended.

How to travel abroad with iPhone and avoid roaming charges

iphone global travelThis article will show how you can take your iPhone with you while traveling abroad, use it to the fullest and avoid expensive roaming costs. For many of us iPhone owners, the iPhone became an indispensable part of our lives. People, like me, became functionally and emotionally attached to this brilliant device. It is very natural that when I travel abroad I want to take my iPhone with me. Not only is it the best travel gadget I know – it has a GPS with local search, a compass (3GS model) and many travel apps, it stores the music I love, my audio book library, many useful, and not so useful but funny apps including of course games I just like to play. Not to mention, it is also a phone. That is why I always wanted to take my iPhone with me whenever I traveled. But until now it was too expensive.

enable or disable 3G roaming on iphone1. Some iPhoners took their AT&T iPhone abroad and used it the same way they used it in the USA. They would switch Data Roaming option on in Settings and hope for the best. When they returned home a nasty surprise from AT&T was waiting for them: a roaming bill for several thousand dollars in iPhone data roaming fees.
Welcome to the cellular carriers’ world of roaming prices.

2. The second option to take your iPhone abroad was to make sure your Data Roaming switch in Settings was OFF. You could still use your iPhone to listen to music or to play games, but in my opinion most of the fun is gone. Why should I be deprived of using cutting edge technology features while on vacation when I need those most? I want to be able to use the great photo and video capabilities of iPhone 3GS, taking pictures while traveling and sending them by email or MMS to my family and friends in real time. I want to be able to immediately publish videos on youtube, or update my twitter and facebook with all of my best vacation experiences while they are still fresh and colorful in my mind. In a new unknown country I want to use Google local search and GPS, but this requires the downloading of Google maps. In short I want to use the iPhone technology to the fullest, which I can’t do if Data Roaming is off. Instead I have to wait until I get back home, or look for free Wi-Fi spots and then upload for hours while wasting precious vacation time. Not so good.

3. The third option for dedicated iPhone users was to unlock their iPhones and, upon arriving at their destination, hunt for a local SIM card which does not require a long term contract yet has an unlimited 3G data plan. There are many problems with this option. Unlocking an iPhone automatically waives the 1-year Apple warranty. After upgrading to the new iPhone OS version the iPhone would be locked again. Unlocked iPhones have problems working with cellular carriers. Most importantly, it is not always easy or even possible to find data SIM cards in foreign countries. For people who value their time and prefer quality service this option is no good as well.

In my life I do not like limitations. I decided to make more affordable and convenient for people to travel with smartphones, because I believe that this is how we will travel in the future. As a result KeepGo.com was created and our first goal was to let iPhone users travel the world with Data Roaming on, but with Data Roaming costs off. Rent Unlimited Internet Sim card with short term communication package for your journey. KeepGo.com sim cards work with AT&T locked iPhones and any unlocked iPhone. All our communication packages include unlimited 3G internet, possibility to make free VoIP calls, voice minutes. You’ll know what your costs are upfront. No roaming data charges. Before your trip you’ll receive an KeepGo.com sim card at your home delivered by FedEx. Insert it into your iPhone, check that you have 3G internet and you are ready to go.

Use advanced services like TripIt or applications like Packing to prepare for your journey.
Then you’ll have all your travel information available to you anywhere, anytime on your iPhone.

Travel happily with the internet in your pocket.
